Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the subjective breast-feeding experiences of mothers with babies or infants in order to understand the attributes and significance of their experiences for enhancing the efficiency of nursing related to the successful feeding and maternal role performance of mothers.

Methods: The subjects were 14 mothers who breast-fed their babies or infants and participated in a breast-feeding contest.

Results: Their writing on breast feeding was analyzed, and 74 concepts were selected from meaning statements extracted from the writing. The selected concepts were classified into 2 categories and 10 sub-categories. Category 1, entitled "joyful and happy feeding experiences" included "the best gift," "overwhelming impression," "feeling worthwhile," "strong sense of a bond," and "breast feeding as being together with the child." Category 2, entitled "tough and strenuous feeding experiences"involved "crisis caused by excessive interest," "breast feeding that was thought to be easy," "society with short considerations," "life without me," and "a painful body that needs to endure."

Conclusion: The mothers viewed their feeding experiences as moments that were very touching and impressive. Furthermore, they faced difficulties in breast feeding in public places because of a lack of spaces that were suitable for it and the general attitude toward breast feeding in public.
